FARMERS MARKET FAQs

Who can apply to be a vendor at Harvest King Farmer’s Market?

We welcome Mississippi-based farmers, home food producers, and artisans who grow, bake, or create their own goods. All products must be produced in Mississippi by the person or family selling them.

What kinds of products are allowed?

Approved products include fresh produce, plants, baked goods, canned or preserved foods, dairy, eggs, meats, handmade crafts, and more. Each vendor type has specific rules:

  • Farm Vendors can sell fruits, vegetables, herbs, honey, eggs, meat, seafood, dairy, seedlings, flowers, and more.

  • Cottage Food Vendors may offer home-prepared items like breads, jams, cookies, or pickles (as allowed by MS Cottage Food Law).

  • Artisans may sell original handmade goods with a home/garden/kitchen theme.

No mass-produced, wholesale, or resold items are permitted.

Can I sell items by weight?

Yes, but you must follow strict guidelines:

  • Vendors selling products by weight must use certified scales.

  • Scales must be NTEP (National Type Evaluation Program) approved.

  • A current-year certification sticker must be clearly visible on the scale.

  • Contact Mississippi Weights & Measures at 601-359-1149 for guidance.

Is organic labeling allowed?

Only if you are USDA-certified organic. You’ll need to provide a copy of your certification with your application. Misusing the word “organic” is prohibited and may lead to dismissal from the market.

What licenses or permits are required?
  • Craft vendors must upload a Mississippi Sales Tax Permit showing registration as a City business.

  • Farm and cottage food vendors are tax-exempt but must still comply with all state regulations.

  • Anyone handling or selling food should complete a food safety training class, such as ServeSafe or one provided by MSU Extension.

Will my products be inspected?

Yes. To ensure a safe and high-quality experience for all customers:

  • Market staff reserve the right to inspect your booth, food items, and crafts at any time.

  • All produce, food items, and handmade goods must be clean, safe, and suitable for sale.

  • If any product is deemed unfit for sale, you may be asked to remove it immediately.

  • Repeat violations could result in removal from the market.

We’re committed to providing a trustworthy shopping experience—and that starts with vendor accountability and product integrity.

Do vendors need to stay for the full market hours?

Yes. All vendors are expected to remain for the full duration of the market (8 AM–12 PM).

  • Cottage food and artisan vendors must bring enough inventory to last the entire market day.

  • Farmers may leave early only if they have completely sold out and have received approval from market management beforehand.
Leaving early without notice may affect your eligibility to return.

Are children allowed to sell at the market?

Yes, youth vendors under 18 are welcome but must have an adult present at all times during the market.

Are there any restrictions on what can be promoted or sold?

Yes:

  • No reselling of products made or grown by someone else.

  • No franchises, MLMs, or independent distributors.

  • No booth sharing between vendor categories (e.g., farm and craft goods must have separate applications and spaces).

  • Soliciting or promoting outside businesses, services, or events is not allowed without prior approval.

What are the clean-up responsibilities?
  • Vendors must clean their entire area before leaving. This includes removing trash, unused product, packaging, and other debris.

  • All vendors must vacate the premises within one hour of market close.

What happens if I violate the rules?
  • First violation: Verbal warning

  • Second violation: Written warning and required corrective action

  • Further or serious violations: Suspension or permanent removal from the market
All complaints are investigated, and decisions by market management are final.
